A Celebration of Robert Burns
Robert Burns (also commonly referred to as Rabbie Burns) is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He was also a composer and collector of songs.
This year the New Hampshire Scottish Music Club is collaborating with the Park Theatre in Jaffrey, NH, for A Celebration of Robert Burns, on Sunday, January 26. (Burns’ birthday, commonly chosen for festivities, is January 25.)
This is an exciting opportunity for our group, as it provides us with something a little more than a concert opportunity. Working with the Park, we will be developing a program of tunes, songs, and recitations that makes this more of a theatrical event. This will elevate our stage skills, and could set a new bar for future concerts.
Over the next month or so we’ll be developing the set list and shaping up the overall program. Two or three rehearsals will be scheduled (possibly as early as November, and certainly in December), and participants will be meeting late morning at the theatre for a run-through of the entire program. If you are interested in playing but have not yet responded, please send a note to orchestra leader Gordon Peery (gpeery1@gmail.com). Note that performing is for members only, so if you’re interested but not yet a member, it’s easy and not very expensive to become one (Join).
