October Gathering

Our founding music director, Barbara McOwen, will lead the workshop. Click here for the music and here to learn more about the tunes.

This is what Barbara has planned for us:

I’m thinking “little reels.” These are those 16-bar diamonds that fill every book of tunes composed/collected from 1730-1930. After 1930 we begin to get the 32-bar wonders and now the 16-bar reels are getting passed over. There are scads of them. I would plan to teach two or three of these short reels.

I believe in always preceding a reel with a strathspey. I’d want to leave time for several reels, so a basic strathspey first.

I’ll plan to teach 1 old-style reel in some detail, and go over more quickly 1-2 additional old-style reels and 1 new-style reel, and the 2 strathspeys. We can front a simple Cape-Breton march before the strathspeys if time. These are all in A major.

As always, our workshop will be followed by a tea & coffee break (with potluck snacks) and time to socialize. Then we will reconvene for about an hour-long jam session. Bring your session book, if you have one. If not, we’ll have some to borrow or to share.

Everyone please arrive in time for a prompt 1 p.m. start.

If you are coming for the first time, note that the rear parking lot off of Fayette St. provides the easiest access. We always try to have extra copies of the music for newcomers, however ear-players are welcome as well.
