Neil Pearlman will present the three part reel John Morris Rankin at our October gathering. The workshop will be followed by a tea and coffee break and jam session.
Neil wrote:
“John Morris Rankin (1959-2000) was one of the great Cape Breton musicians of his generation. A master fiddler, piano player and tune writer, his contributions to Cape Breton music were immense. This tune was written for him by another great fiddler, Dougie MacDonald.
In my October 8 workshop we will dig into this tune in detail. I plan to teach the melody by ear, go over stylistic pointers and ideas, teach some harmony lines, break down the chords to the tune (both those written down and some alternative suggestions) and talk about some broader arrangement ideas.”
Listen to Neil playing the reel and the harmony line here.
For more about John Morris and Dougie MacDonald, see here in Tune Tales.
Everyone please arrive in time for a prompt 1 p.m. start.
If you are coming for the first time, note that the rear parking lot off of Fayette St. provides the easiest access. We always try to have extra copies of the music for newcomers.
