Recipe for Fun

Playing music is fun! There are few people who would say otherwise, in any genre of music. But really having fun with our music requires some amount of discipline and organization. For a group like the Scottish Music Club we seek to balance setting goals for musical quality in both our rehearsals and public performances with keeping things casual and fun - we do not aspire to be a professional symphony orchestra.

We encourage anyone to join. There are no auditions, and no fixed rules about your level of musical capability. The one requirement is that each of us should be committed to becoming better, no matter where we are starting from, and also to improving our orchestral skills - learning to listen to each other, and to become at ensemble playing.

The good news is that there are strong dividends that come from investing in those efforts. Over the last few months I have on several occasions seen smiles popping out when we finish playing a piece, and everyone knows it was the best yet that we have played it.

Having concerts on the schedule gives us an incentive to rehearse more vigorously. There is a great satisfaction in playing for an audience, and, of course, our performances should really shine.

This spring we have two concerts on the schedule. It’s conceivable that more will be added, and certainly we hope that by next year (when we are more fully emerged from Covid) there will be several concert opportunities. And while we like to plan well in advance, technically we should be ready to put on a show at the drop of a hat.

If you are already a member of the Scottish Music Club, be sure to review the updated rehearsal and concert schedule.

If you are not yet a member, you are welcome to join us for our regular monthly gatherings, which will often include rehearsing the current concert repertoire. Our concert music is always available on our music page. We hope that you will decide you want to perform with us, which does require that you be a member. It’s easy and inexpensive to join.

Since rebranding as the New Hampshire Scottish Music Club, we are seeing an influx of inquiries and resulting new memberships. We have an exciting future ahead, and we hope you’ll be a part of it, and also share this with your friends.
